PRESS RELEASE

NEW SELF DRIVE HOLIDAYS FOCUS ON AUSTRALIA’S UNIQUE WILDLIFE!

5 January 2005

Created as selfdrivetasmania.com by Margret Anutha and Karen Rees, this family-run Tasmanian business has now gone national under the name of selfdriveaustralia.com.au.

Having already received excellent client feedback for their attention to detail, service and creative itineraries, the pair decided to apply these strengths to the self drive holiday market Australia-wide. In line with a growing trend of customers making their own holiday reservations on the internet they have opted for a virtual travel consultancy on-line with phone back-up.

“We provide a personalised service to our customers whilst giving them access to basic product information on-line,” Karen Rees explains. “Our flexible packages include Must-See Journeys for first time visitors to Australia, Insider Journeys for locals and repeat visitors, Designer Journeys for tailor-made itineraries as well as the new concept of Selfdrive Wildlife Safaris.

The concept of a Selfdrive Wildlife Safari combines a self drive holiday in regional Australia with short high quality guided wildlife safaris. Visitors who travel independently are provided with a fully documented itinerary that focuses on nature and wildlife in each area they visit. Suitable places and times for wildlife viewing and information about local animals are included. Each itinerary also includes short, guided wildlife experiences unique to the region.

“We have developed these products with the expertise of local wildlife tourism operators who know the wildlife in their region intimately and have provided us with insider information about wildlife viewing spots,” Karen explained. “ Our first two safaris were developed for Tasmania and Eyre Peninsula, South Australia with a third under development for north west Australia. Each of these regions has phenomenal potential for self drive holidays and offers fantastic wildlife experiences, if you know where to look for them.”

The 9 D Tassie Devil Safari focuses on seeing the Tasmanian Devil as well as visiting so-called wildlife hotspots in both well and lesser known parts of the State. One of the highlights is an evening tour with King’s Run Wildlife Tours where Tasmanian Devils are observed amidst the wild beauty of Tasmania’s north west coast. Other experiences include a seal cruise, a guided ‘Quoll Patrol’ on private land, a viewing spot for the elusive platypus and a visit to Cradle Mountain’s famous World Heritage Area where wombats are one of the highlights. Accommodation and hire cars can be booked in different categories to provide maximum choice for guests.

The 8 D Eyre Peninsula Wildlife Safari highlights the wildlife attractions of this lesser know part of South Australia. Wildlife viewing opportunities in local National Parks include emus, bettongs, bilbies, western grey kangaroos and many bird species. A highlight of this product is swimming with a colony of Australian sea lions as well as dolphins. These playful creatures join small groups of visitors in the safe shallows of Baird Bay and never fail to delight. Backed with sensational local accommodation and the option for dinner cooked by your own chef, this journey will consist of only highlights. As a finale guests will go on a 2 night wildlife safari to the Gawler Ranges in the grand style of African safaris. The only remaining problem is they won’t want to leave the romantic Kangaluna Camp where the day is concluded around the campfire under an endless sky.

selfdriveaustralia offers creative itineraries and flexible customer service where guests always have choice. A solid portfolio of wilderness lodges, island resorts, outback stations and city hotels as well as guided adventure tours and chauffeur-driven tours backs the range of self drive options.

“Our motto of ‘less is more’ means we offer only quality products together with quality service and local knowledge”, Karen explains. “We believe that self drivers often miss out on unique local experiences and hope to offer an alternative for those wishing to tap into our local knowledge. We offer a fast, obligation-free quotation service for tailor-made Designer Journeys, where the guests decide where they want to go and we provide our knowledge to create a successful trip.”

The entire product range of selfdriveaustralia is available in English as well as German. Itineraries can also be delivered in other languages at additional cost. All products are available to the customer direct or to travel agents through an agent log-in facility.

As part of their commitment to conservation, selfdriveaustralia donates $5 for every customer to a wildlife conservation cause, at present this is the Tasmanian Devil Field Monitoring Fund which is part of the scientific effort to combat the Tasmanian Devil Facial Tumour Disease.
