Australia's second oldest city (after Sydney) enjoys a topography unrivalled by any mainland state capital. With a mountain at its back and a river at its feet, the city straddles the River Derwent, climbs the foothills of Mount Wellington and covers the top of Mount Nelson. From almost any vantage point there are views of mountains and water, and natural bushland is easily accessible. The city's eastern and western districts are jointed by the Tasman Bridge; to the north and south, the suburban sprawl has reached as far as Bridgewater and Kingston.

Settled in 1804, Hobart reflects a colourful colonial history of convicts, wealthy merchants and semen.
